The Official "Ask The Trainer Road Guys" Discussion
Hi Folks:
Because you are EN members and we now have our awesome partnership with Trainer Road, you now have direct access to the creators of Trainer Road, Reid Weber and Nate Pearson right here right now. w00t!
Nate and Reid now have access to EN and are here to answer any and all questions about TR you may have and also listen to any feedback you may have.
So fire away with any questions in this thread. Don't be shy.
Thanks.
John

@ Freddy - TR Intros:
Hey I just used Workout Creator this weekend! FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!.....I can now create a workout to synch with some longer ride/videos (ie. On the Road with TJacobsoen Lake Placid/Kona/Louisville/ and Mt. Lemmon Virtual Rides!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).....
Ditto to Tim's question...anyway to string two templates togehter?
Zane,
You have to request access to the EN stuff as it is hidden from the rest of TR.

For Nate/Reid - at the present time, the Workout Creator does not seem to show the OS workouts. Thus, it's not possible to modify those workouts to personalize the warm-up. Am I missing something about how to get those workouts to show up in the Creator, or will that capability be included in the near future?
I have a Cycleops 300 Pro Indoor Cycle. It's ANT+ but only between the PowerTap and the Joule and does not transmit to an ANT+ stick. I think you guys were looking into those issues with Saris. Do you have any update?
I put in my request. Thanks Jeff!
My only comment would be that it incorporates my FTP numbers for the main set but not for the rest of the ride. My FTP is not 126 once the MS is done. So if I want to ride for say, 90 minutes, I have to manually keep track of my own numbers at be sure to stay at 80-85% without the help of TR. It would be nice if TR could adjust my target power automatically. If it does it for the MS why can't it do it for the remainder of the ride?
Or am I doing something wrong and it should be making the adjustment automatically?
I've been designing my own workouts using the main set as a template, but then adding things like add'l tempo time etc or a customized warmup. When I set one up as 45/45 or 30/30 sets, the software is referring to them as "sweet spot" intervals (in other words, a 3x45 set isn't 3 45sec VO2 intervals but instead measures all the "on" and "off" time as one unit. How do I create it to record the avg power for each 45 sec or shorter interval?
(Intervals of 5-10 min work fine).

I have a question about TR. I did a test last week after downloading the software and did my FTP with the results pretty much the same as last week. But during today's workout as I tried to push harder near the end the resistance on the Computrainer seemed to adjust so the cadence was kept around 90 so that the watts stayed in the same general ball park. When I shifted to a harder gear to power up the resistance slowly decreased to keep the watts the same. Am I crazy or does the software do that automatically? Do I increase the percentage to get more resistance? Thanks.
@Chris - the version of Workout Creator you have uses 50% FTP as the threshold for what is considered a "rest" period, meaning until it sees a section that drops to 50% or less, it will combine everything into 1 "set", such as the "Sweetspot" you have in your workout. The next version of the workout creator (v.0.0.12) that Peter referred to changes this. But, for now, the only way to accomplish what you want is to either set each rest period to 50%, or to UN-check the Constrain FTP button, set the Start FTP to 50, and the End FTP to whatever you want. Setting the start at 50 will trigger TR to see that as rest and will allow the peak intervals to show up as you are wanting. That's what I did for the custom workouts I had created prior to this.
That makes sense. Should have figured it was something like that. Any idea when's the next version's coming out?
10min EZ
8min building @ 2min increments
2min EZ
-----------
20 min warmup
@Chris and Greg: Not trying to nitpick (since there isn't any real difference between 50 and 55%), but TR indicates that going below 55% will help the program recognize another interval. So, doing what Greg says (uncheck the constrain FTP and put in some value < 55% for the initial and then whatever you want for the end FTP) will work.
My friend has a bumper sticker that says "1 out of 2 people are good in math, and the other 2 aren't."
Thanks in advance for the clarification.
@Jim - the suggested FTP that TR gives you should be the correct FTP number for you - at least it was for me when I tested. I am guessing that if you looked at your avg. and/or NP for that 20' section, it would be around 236? And TR takes 95% of that to get the 225.
When I upload tcx files created by TR to Training peaks or golden cheetah, the data is not sgemented into intervals. i.e. in training peaks under the map/graph tab I see peak 5s,10s power etc but no interval 1,2,3. Is this what others experience as well?
Yes, for sure. This is a three step process and EN is currently in the first step.
Here's how I see it coming out:
1) Have public and private groups so that people can share workouts, calendars, stats and communicate with eachother. Again, EN is helping us pave the way here with their private group.
2) Let people scheudule online group workouts with other people in that group. So, EN guys could all get up on Sat morning and do an OS ride together. They'd share their live data, voice and video.
We've already built a prototype for this. It's not released yet because we feel strongly that having these groups and making something easy to use that someone can schedule rides with is an important base to have.
3) Online races. We'd like to have 40+ people races. We think we can build it so it's very fun, fair and a great workout.
It has for about a year now . If you're having problems, drop us a line at support@trainerroad.com and we'll get you going. We have over 100 guys using SRMs right now (including Reid).
In case someone hasn't responded yet, you have to register for the group at http://www.trainerroad.com/groups/endurance-nation-2
Once you register, the admins at EN have to give you access to the group. You'll get an e-mail when that goes through.
