  • G'day Philip! Welcome to the team. My wife and I are from the States but lived in Wellington for work a few years back and loved NZ. No worries about the bike; you'll get your fitness back and then some especially if you follow the OS plan.  I'm a good runner & swimmer but a terrible cyclist yet I managed a respectable time this year at an Ironman.

By the way, you should post your FTP questions to the "Power & Pace" forum (Training tab > Training Forums).  Good luck!

  • Hello everyone,
I'm giving this a trial membership for now and I'm looking forward to checking out everything much more thoroughly. I expect I will be joining as a full member shortly.

  •  Hi all! Giving this a go for a few days. I am doing my first HIM at Eagleman in the spring and definitely need some coaching/planning help. I've heard nothing but good about EN but the big IF for me will be if I can convince myself to stick with on-line coaching resources after spending 8-10 hours/day staring at the computer at work. So I'll check things out the next couple days and go from there.

  • Cory - Welcome - hope to see you as a full member of the team - I'm pretty sure we've got a few other members in your area.

Peter - Eagleman 2009 was my first HIM, I did it w/o the benefit of EN coaching, so you'll be at an advantage. Think about the ROI of other ways of coaching when you log in to EN after 8-10 a day of computer time. ALSO, you don't need to spend a lot of time on the site, you could just log in and get your day's/week's workout(s) and move on, BUT in general, the more time you spend here int the forums, exploring the wiki and connecting with other members, the more you'll probably get out of it. Good luck.

  • Hi, I'm Lynne and I'm here on my trial membership. I'm a busy 40-something mom with a full time job from SouthWestern Wisconsin. Although I'm not new to running, I want to train for my first triathlon. I'm hoping you can help me with my first sprint and to move up after that. I have run 2 half marathons, but at an embarrassingly slow pace. I'm hoping to become more competitive with my age group. I haven't run much the last few months after being ill and anemic, but I'm ready to get back to work.
  • I'm Nicole. I completed my first IM at Placid last year and have definitely been bit by the bug. IMLP left me wanting more, both in terms of my own performance, and just craving more of the overall experience. I've got IMFL lined up for next November, with at least one HIM planned along the way. EN came to me hugely recommended, and in surfing around, I definitely had my interest peaked. A call from Coach Patrick yesterday has me stoked for the 2012 season. Looking forward to becoming a member of TeamEN!
  • Greetings Endurance Nation from Sierra Madre, CA (Pasadena Area). I heard a lot of tremendous things about Coach Rich from my new friends at the Pasadena Tri Club (PTC) and after a lot of research I decided to give it a try.

I got into swim, bike run as a way to lose weigh and get fit. July 1st, 2010 I weighed 251 pounds. This morning I was 173. I credit my success to two years without alcohol, a great nutritionist and Triathlon training. Now that I have lost the weight, I WANT TO BE FAST! I can just hang with the crowd on the PTC Thursday AM runs and long Saturday rides, but I want to be in front....

To date, I have only done two events, both in 2011 - The Malibu Tri (sprint) and the Turkey Tri (Sprint in San Dimas, CA) - but, I really enjoy the satisfaction I get from the training. I am amazed at how far I can go and how fast I get there versus the guy I was 18 months ago. Next year I want to do 3 half marathons, two 70.3 events (Wildflower and Santa Barbara) and embarrass my brother at the Malibu. He beat me last year by 6 minutes - mostly in transition. I had a faster bike split but he had a few strokes/steps on me in the other disciplines.

I have been self training with TrainingPeaks and the Friel book, "The Triathlon Training Bible", but it didn't really make sense to me to go long and slow.... Now it's time to put in the work!

    All the best,

    Ds

  •  Hello all!  My name is Val and I am a firefighter/EMT from Las Vegas.

I have completed 2 IM's, but my last one was 6 years ago.  I have been doing a lot of shorter distance stuff and 70.3's and finally had a PR this year (broke 6 hours - woohoo) at 50 years old.  Decided it was time to go long again and wanted to give it my best shot so I'm looking forward to working with EN folks!  Ironman Louisville 2012 here I come

  • Hi Folks,
Looks like I will convert to full member in a few days, so I wanted to introduce myself. I've been racing since 2009. Completed 2 half IM, B2B full in 2010, and numerous sprint and oly races. I performed well at Augusta 2010, went 5:20, and NOLA half 2012 went 4:40 without the swim (was cancelled). However, B2B full didnt go so well. I had major GI issues. I think they were a result of accidentally taking a few huge gulps of sea water on the swim. My goal was 12 hours, but went 13:20ish. Needless to say, I was disappointed that my race was less about competing based on my fitness and more about managing my trips to the port-o-john. The plan was to try another full in 2011, but after NOLA, I started experiencing crazy ITBS issues. That basically shut me down for the remainder of 2011. I'm still dealing with the IT band, but my A race this year is Cozumel. I need to drop abou 15lbs, and I've lost a ton of bike fitness. Just picked up a new SHIV, so excited about doing some good work on the bike. My run fitness is ok, as I've been training for an early season marathon. I also swim like a rock, so I will have work to do in the pool. Thats my story. Looking forward to training with you peeps!
  • Val, Louisville is a really good race.  Just be prepared for the humidity!

Todd, my wife & I are hoping to do B2B this year if it hasn't sold out already...I may have to pm you for some tips!

    Welcome to the team!

  • @ Todd - I had the same issue with seawater at IMFLA back in '09! Between porta-pottie stops on the bike and every mile on the run (to include waiting in line) I must have lost an hour. So - don't sell yourself short. You probably had the fitness to go 12:00.

As far as swimming - Rich just put together a swimming instruction program that you sehould be able to find in Wiki. I haven't looked - but it was in the last EN update. Glad to have you here - this is a great organization!
  •  Hi everybody.

My name is Jeff.  I am 35 years old.  I got into endurance sports about 5 years ago.  The last triathlon I did was the Louisville Ironman in 2009.  I have spent the last couple of years doing mostly trail runs and Ultramarathons.  I would like to eventually have a shot at Kona but right now I am just looking to concentrate on biking and shoot for a 5 to 5.5 hour Half IM this year.

  • @Jeffrey - Welcome! You have found a great place to further your triathlon training and execution skills. I would highly recommend you follow the "New Members start here" in the wiki. And then fire away with your questions.
    Joe
  • Hi Jeffery,
Thanks for posting here. Look for your season plan from me later today!
  • Hola a todos!

I'm Niels from Chicago (originally from Amsterdam) and just joined EN. Up to know I've been training quite intense but always without a plan or any other resources. Am excited to be an EM member now. My goals is to qualify for Kona at Ironman Louisville (August) this year. Am also doing Ironman 70.3 in New Orleans (April), Racine (July) and Montreal (Sept). Look forward to working with you!

    cheers

    Niels

  • Welcome.    Hope to see you in Kona.

  • Niels - You have come to the right place to learn how to ROCK it at IMLoo. There is a wealth of knowledge here on training and racing in the heat. Most important is how much to dial back based on the temperature. As you read through the wiki, fire away with questions. Looking forward to meeting you at Racine.
    Joe
  • Thanks Joe! I'll take MLK day to catch up on some reading. See you in Racine and we'll be in touch in the mean time
  • I am a total newbie, having never done a triathlon before. Just got my bike this weekend... will need much coddling and support. Thanks in advance, EN!

  • @ Angela - Welcome!!  And Congratulations for diving into our crazy sport.  You'll be a tri veteran before you know it.  One of the best things about EN is that members willingly share their experiences, insights, tips and support with each other.  Be a sponge and soak it up.  Make sure you read thru the training forums (under the Training tab about) to learn about all kinds of tri stuff.  Also, look thru the Wiki (under the Resources tab), click on the Wiki table of contents and you'll see a treasure trove of tri knowledge.  Finally, I suggest that you read every post that you see from a Wicked Smart Member (WSM) - these are the members who have been nominated by other members for their knowledge, experience and willingness to share/teach others.  Good luck and welcome aboard.

  • Hi Everybody. My name is Bart Stevens. And I'm a tri addict.

I live in Kerrville, TX, a small town in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, a secret tri-Utopia. I became addicted the very first time. At the 2009 CapTexTri Sprint. I swam in bike shorts, almost drowned, and received penalties for passing on the right AND using an iPod. And that was just the stuff they saw. I started cramping in T1, which I had somehow mistaken for some sort of casual halftime break. But once I was freed from the penalty tent, I was hooked. I've gone *3* full years without a penalty. I moved up to the Olympic distance in 2010 and then long course in 2011, including IMTX.

I am currently battling multiple dependency issues, including GU, Clif Blocks, and now Optygen. But I'm making progress every day. I often dream of Neoprene wetsuits and Continental tubulars, an unholy and expensive rubber alliance for sure. I have a crush on Chrissie Wellington, but nothing dangerous. And restraining orders are made to be broken anyways. If I can just win Kona, maybe she'll talk to me, or respond to my repeated letters.

In 2012, I'm signed up for IMCA, IMCDA and IMCO. I'm considering Thailand in Dec 2013. Assuming I don't burnout or drive myself into poverty from race fees and Real Course Videos. And the Optygen addiction, of course, which is surprisingly costly.

I've joined because I can do better than I have in the past. And after this later round of insurance hikes, this became a cheaper option than therapy (barely). My stroke is truly frightening, I've been your stereotypical "Bart Badass" on the bike, rocketing up all the hills, only to get lapped by you and all your buddies at miles 6, 18 and 24. My goals are to actually complete a full Ironman marathon without walking or the dreaded shuffle. I want to feel the "pointy end" of long course racing. This is my story.
  • Hello everyone my name is John and I'm here testing out the free trial membership. I was introduced to EN by Jonathan Lieberman. I am a former triathlete turned couch potato. After almost 20 years, I'm ready to start racing again. Started exercising in June and started training in October. I'm looking forward to my first 70.3 race in August.
  • @Bart - nice message! But, you gotta stand in line behind the rest of us for Chrissie!
  • Hi There...

I'm Patrick Dalton from St. John's, Newfoundland. (NL is a Canadian Province, but we call ourselves Newfoundlanders before Canadians)

I first did a tri when i was 18 in high-school and into cycling... I did a sprint.. I finished second last, beating the guy who got hit by a car, passed him in the last few hundred meters, while his buddies were carrying him to the finish. I don't know if it was co-incidence or not that the first aid tent was on the other side of the finish line. I digress.

Then I decided to give smoking a pack-a-day a try. Although it required much less training I did love that sport for the next 17 years.

As a new-years lark in 2009, years after my father dying of a heart attack (he was obese) and my uncle nearly dying of a stroke (heavy smoker) I decided it my turn. So I didn't quit smoking...

I started swimming again... Couldn't swim 2 lengths of the 18M pool without gasping.

2 Months later, I decided to quit smoking... to cope with this decision I started with the dreaded 2 min walk, 1 min run. A week after doing this in the closet, I shared with people that I had quit smoking and took tri back up again.

Four months later I did my first tri since highschool... Unfortunately nobody got hit by a car... I came in dead last. At both distances I attempted. (sprint and oly) But I didn't let that stop me. I also got my neighbour/childhood friend involved who needed to lose weight.

The following year, (2010 season) with some minor swim coaching and improved fitness, I managed to hack almost 1 hour off my Oly distance tri..

2011 season I decided I'd complete a marathon... but I was (and still am a bit) overweight. I lost 28 pounds and managed to get rid of some pesky running injuries and started training with a hard core running club in my city. 4:30 was my first marathon the fall past.

This year... it's IM 70.3 in Mt. Tremblant. I picked it for an early season target, motivation for the winter, because I'll never run Boston and need something to aim for! The fall may be another marathon... Maybe IM 70.3 Miami... Who knows. That's after June!

    My issues:

DIET! I think I'm a food addict. Wings and Beer are a godsend and I try to limit it to once a week.

(I think I'm a borderline alcoholic too, but that's just part of being a Newfoundlander)

Swim - trying to get a good stroke down, breathing properly (bilateral isn't easy for me) and legs sinking.

Bike - Getting the most of out the bike...

Run - rebuilding the mileage and eventually getting some sustainable speed. Since the marathon and Christmas, I gained 18 pounds...

    goals...

Get my weight down to 190-195 lbs by june 24.

Finish Mt. T in 6 hours or less (with a 1:30-1:45 run)

    and the most important...

HAVE FUN! Because lets be honest... There's no other reason to be at this madness otherwise!

Right now I want to explore this community. After reading Bart's post above, sounds like I'll fit in just fine. hahaha..

Last, all this talk of Chrissy Wellington? Come on.. Mirinda Carfrae is way hotter.

  • Hey EN peeps!  Sarah here.  I'm also new to EN and still fairly new to the tri world.  Hmm, where to start?  Well, like Patrick, I am a former pack a day smoker and quit back in 2003. Fast forward to 2009 when I was going through some major life events/changes, so decided to sign up for my first century.  Sometime in March, I registered for the San Jose Livestrong Challenge (in July) and then bought my first bike since I was 10 years old 3 months before the event.  I ended up with a total ride time of 9 hours (6.5 on the bike).  I didn't have anything to compare it with so I was pretty happy.

In 2010, I joined a cycling team and did a few crits and time trials throughout the season. I even managed to sprinkle in a couple duathlons and fun rides and runs.  Last year was my first year for triathlons and I did a sprint in June and a half iron in July (it was hot as hell!) Finally rounded out the season with an OLY in Sept.  (As an aside, the sprint was an all women's tri and I tell ya what, the women in that race were buh-ru-tal in the swim! Does NOT make me look forward to the mass start at IMWI )

My A race this year is IMWI. I've also got a HIM scheduled in June.

I've perused the site and there's so much great information.  Just want to say thanks in advance for all the helpful advice!  I trained with a group last year but I've decided to try it on my own this year.  Just made the decision this week so I'm still in the process of gathering info, absorbing the reality of my decision, and still wondering if I can really do it.

Anywho, looking forward to chattin, workin with, and hopefully meetin other EN folks!

  • Hi everyone! My name is Justine and I live in the beautiful Cayman Islands where I transplanted from Canada. I have been doing tri's every year since 2001, some years more seriously than others mind you! I've done all the distances from sprint to IM, I love it all!

I'm not very organized with a training program or goals for this year (just way too many other things going on in life) but I'm starting off the 2012 season with the Florida Haines City 70.3 in May. Then we'll see.

I'm a MOP triathlete, I don't like swimming (although swimming here in the open water isn't that bad I have to admit image , I love biking but I'm a better swimmer than cyclist, go figure!! I love running too and fortunately I can run better than I swim!

Looking forward to getting to know all of you!

    Happy training!
  • Hi All,

My name is Adrian. I have been participating in triathlons for about 10 years now, although I have come to realize that Triathlons do me not me them image I enjoy all the distances but seemed to have fallen in love with Ironmans more than anything. My goal is Kona.

I have done three Ironmans, in fact it was at Ironman Coeur D'Alene a few years ago that I learned of Endurance Nation. It was also at this race that I knew that one day I would be joining these guys ! I was one the second bike loop of what turned out to be a bitterly cold day. Way back in the woods, literally in the middle of nowhere I came across a lonesome guy cheering and giving, what turned out to be very valuable advice. I was completely on my own at that point so I knew he was talking to me. It turned out to be coach Rich, it could have been coach Patrick I cant recall exactly right now but, needless to say I thought how cool, here is a big time coach, in the middle of nowhere, in the cold, willing to encouraging and supporting a guy that's not even part of his team ! I was sold and although it took me a few years I am finally here !

My goal race is Lake Placid and I am very excited to do this iconic race.

I live in Colorado Springs so been spending a lot of time on the CompuTrainer lately, I love Colorado though and would be hard pressed to live anywhere else image

Too thus far I have been pretty much a loner when it comes to training so I am excited to shake things up a little and get to know and train with the Endurance Nation in the coming months.

    Only your best !
    Adrian
  • Justine and Adrian - Welcome! Whatever your goals are with respect to triathlon, you have come to the right place. The learning curve can be a bit steep at times, but all you have to do is ask and The Team will help out however we can.
  • HI Team. Very excited to join this group as it came highly recommended from a friend who is a multiple IM competitor. I have 26 years of triathlons under my belt, and a life-long IronMan goal. Completed my first half IM last year and registered for IM Florida in November.

I live in a spectacular area of New Jersey ( come see me, I'll prove it!!) I love all three elements of triathlons. I tend to be a "solo trainer", using group training as a way to improve speed/performance but not a necessity to keep me motivated. I like to keep up on the latest and greatest equipment, training techniques and nutrition concepts.

Looking at endurance nation as a way to connect and share ideas on how to stay injury free, perform at a competitive level and train efficiently so I still have time for that pesky thing called work...

    Regards, Marian
