WOW! Lots of new faces. Welcome to the team everyone. It's going to be an awesome year. Those of us up north envy the folks already getting outside and planning for A races in May. There's still a couple of feet of snow on the ground in Minnesota, and we've got at least another solid month of winter to go. Looking forward to seeing all of you in the forums!
i have scheduled my first ironman tri this sept.. done 2 half IMs in 09 & 10. i've used EN in the last 3 of my 14+ yrs doing tris. i ain't young. not looking to win i just want to look down and see my belt buckle. the HIMs have helped but another 15 lbs would be better. i hope my fear of nto finishing the IM will give me the focus to get down to 190. i have a HIM in May (White Lake). this will be my third year and second year doing a sprint tri the next day. i guess i just love beating my head against a wall.
i think i have fairly good swim stroke, getting a new bike and finally bike shoes (i feel safer in toe clips). i doubt i run enough and should swim more but nutrition is my main concern this time of year. i have a basic idea of my training plan but hopefully will be using EN to make it firm and as good as possible. my goal is 7 hrs in March, and 8-10 in april for my two mid-may tris.
DC tri & swim&tri at national senior games in june are my B races. i have IM rehersals in July and August.
Hey everyone, another new member here from Newport Beach, CA.
I've been on the EN half-iron 12 week plan for the past 7 weeks in advance of the 70.3 California on April 2 and feeling good. Doing a warm-up Olympic this weeked in Palm Springs - the Desert International Tri. I've done sprints and olympic distance races for the past two years (LA, OC, Alcatraz, Pacific Coast) and am looking forward to my first half-iron. Hopefully it motivates me to move on to the full iron distance. I'm doing a few other olympic distance races later in the year - OC, San Diego, LA - and thinking about finding another half-iron race later in the year. Look forward to meeting other Orange County EN members.
Hello everyone, I just joined EN this week. I live in Portland, OR and have been doing triathlons for about 8 years now, mostly sprint and olympic distance but have done 2 HIMs. I love it! This is the first year I'm making the jump to a full IM - I'll be doing IMAZ in November. I've got 3 little kids (8, 6, and 4) and a husband who also does triathlon. We trade childcare duties on the weekend so we can both train. I'm excited, but also quite nervous about doing a full IM. Also, the whole power meter thing on the bike is a new concept for me - would you say it's very necessary? Or can I get by just training on intensity zones on the bike? (I train by pace when running). I'm looking forward to the support and resources here in EN! Janine
Welcome, Janine! Glad you joined and not sure if you received my message from another posting of yours. You'll have a good time in here. I am new too and don't use a PM yet. I've made some real strides with the HR & pace training, but a PM is definitely on my list of things to buy--Good luck at IMAZ! Dottie
@ Dottie - thank you! I just "discovered" the wiki yesterday, and I can't believe the amount of info on the pages! There's a lot to sort through - but it's great to have all this information so easily accessible. I think I'll put the PM purchase on hold until I absorb some of the rest of the training info. See you in the other forums (I'll look for your other post!) Janine
A power meter is a great thing to have, but certainly not necessary.
You're right too, this site can be a little overwhelming with all the information available, but it's worth it. Lurk for a while, post questions and feel free to send me or others private messages if you can't find what you are looking for. In general, lots of nice folks here, all to have fun and learn a lot.
Yes, late in the season, but just joined. This is my second year in triathlon after a ten year hiatus (school/residency). I'm in Marin County (N of SF) married, with two boys 9 and 6. I have a few 70.3 events and Alcatraz on the calendar for the year along with a sprint or two with my 9 year old. Still trying to make my way through all the info on the site, but really like what I see so far.
My background is being a marathon runner. I've added duathlons into the mix this year while I'm getting my swimming down to something that I'm comfortable with. I've also been able to snag some age group wins so far this season too, which makes me a little happy as I'm working towards tri! My goal is to complete my first tri, 5150 Clearwater, this fall, then continue working at it to take on 70.3 Florida next year or so, and eventually make 70.3's my main A races in a year over marathons. My ultimate goal at the moment is to complete a full Ironman before I turn 30, so within the next 5 years. (I guess I just dated myself there.)
Since tri is still so new to me, I'm really excited that I've gotten the opportunity to join EN. I've kind of been lurking about during my trial period, and I've found that I really like the huge amount of resources and knowledge that Coach RnP and the members of the community provide. It makes me excited that I wouldn't be going through this process alone, as I have in the past in completing marathons, and I look forward to my tri future!
Triathlon beginner here ready to get started. Wish I could say something impressive like other newbies like "come from marathon background" or "come from college swimming background".
Unfortunately, at this point in my life I am basically coming from "couch background".
Played "ball sports" through college, but not much background in endurance sports. After about 10 years of school and training it is time to make a change. Have been interested in triathlon for a couple of years, but never really knew where to start. Found this site through a friend and looks great! Can't wait to get after it.
Welcome aboard Chris! There are lots of beginners around here, so you'll have company. Jump right in, read everything you can, and ask questions when you have them.
Good Morning! I am a new EN member as of this weekend!
Not much interesting to say about myself. I've been particpating in triathlons with family and friends for 10 years. I enjoy the comaraderie of the sport and being in good shape because of the workouts! I participated in my first Ironman 2 years ago in Madison and motivated my husband to want to do one as well! As a result, we are both training for Madison Ironman this September. I thought this time around I might "kick it up a notch" and see if I can improve on my IM time from two years ago. We'll see how that goes! If anything, I thought joining EN would be a good way to meet new people and at the same time, learn some new tricks!
I look forward to meeting new people and having a great time training this year!!
@Beth- Welcome. Nothing interesting to say? The fact that both you and your husband are training for an IM at the same time is very interesting. This should make an interesting household for a few months. I know my family couldn't manage something like that. Good luck and have fun!
I'm off in 3 hours for the flight to Zurich for IM Switzerland. The hills will be alive with the sound of derailleurs and disk wheels shortly. Swimming in the Zurichzee. (Lake Zurich). Should be mild weather.
I expect to finish under 15:00, but am not making any promises.
@ Peter: Ha ha!! You're right! Both husband and wife with two kids (ages 5 and 2)!! Our lives have been crazy for the past two months. So far so good, but there's a lot of time left. The good thing is I work part time and can train during the day. Plus good babysitters on board too!
Thanks everyone for the welcome. I am enjoying all the great reads and feel good about becoming a member of Team EN!!
Finally found the new member thread... I just joined today. I did an outseason training plan last year and experienced pretty decent gains in run speed and bike FTP. My 3 mile speed increased by 3 minutes, and added 50 watts to my FTP. Prior to 2 years ago, I mostly took up space on the couch and something clicked and had to make a change.
I shed about 100# to this date, and have been teetering around that mark. I've been doing spring Duathlons for the past 2 years, and have been inspired by some friends to do Ironman.
I haven't done swimming for about 5 years before this past May when my knee finally gave out from a fall on the ice in March 2010. The knee even held up for a marathon in April. The diagnosis on the knee was arthritis and a torn meniscus. ( I had experienced lockups on the knee and finally had surgery on it in late July) My swimming is at a decent pace but looking to make it faster: 1000yds in under 21 minutes.
I've finally committed to a couple of races(Muncie in July 2012, and will be committing to Madison 2012) and I feel I need the training resources to get faster and stronger.
Just joined today! I have been snooping around on the site for a few months and finally decided to just do it! Figured the OS was a great time to start!!
Born, raised and back living in MN after 20 yrs in CA and AZ. Would not have wanted to start tri's then...that would have been too easy! . I come from a running background (30yrs) with many marathons under my belt and numerouus other races, but am new to tri's as of this season. I did 4 sprints and 1 HIM. Loved it! I'm hooked!
For 2012 I have Oceanside 70.3 as my A race. Yes... I realize I will be INSIDE all winter in the pain cave, but I figured sunny San Diego was good motivation and a reason for a mid winter thaw out! I then have a couple other HIMS to complete and see what else pops up. Plan to do a IM in 2013.
Super excited to have found EN and all of the resources available plus coaches and team member feedback...a lot overwhelming, but think of all the hours of great reading when the snow flies!
I just joined today with just 35 days to FL Ironman. I am from Atlanta and have been using a EN plan to get ready but decided to take the step and try the team.
Hi Steve, Welcome aboard! I graduate from Emory University in 1990, lived there '86-95, and my sister lives in Ansley Park. I usually pass through town a couple times each year.
Hey Annie - welcome to the Great White North sleeper cell. There are a handful of us in MN. If you're up for getting together sometime, PM me and we'll see what we can cook up. Are you doing October or November OS?
I'm new to EN and am training for IMSG next May. After RAGBRAI 2010 I started training for IMUK on July 31, 2011. Unfortunately I had 2 leg injuries in 2011 that caused me to withdraw from IMUK: a knee injury while bartending in January and a torn soleus in March. After overtraining like it was the right thing to do, I've come to EN for a more balanced approach to reaching my IM goal. I've spent most of the year's worth of training alone and am greatly looking forward to being on a team. I'm trying to get up to speed right now going the volumes of web pages here at EN, and hope to get into the October OS plan this week.
Welcome aboard! Knee injury while bartending....that's a new one . I put myself through college, and a couple years post college, bartending, among other things. Never got injured, though I did have to go over the bar a few times to retreive a stolen tip jar or stop a fight. Good times!
New to EN. I have completed two IM's to date. IMK in 2010 and IMSG in 2011. This is my first experiment in online coaching. I have a 5 year plan to qualify for Kona! I will either get faster or outlive my competition.
I'm new to the EN family and looking forward to seeing how this progresses. This is my first foray into online coaching (well really any coaching structure). I have completed 2 IM's (Madison '08 & '09) and after 2 years of not racing long distance found the urge to get back into the game. I used the OS plan last year and saw some definite improvements on my run this year and I am looking forward to continuing those improvements. The previous IM's were done without any coaching, just a little reading and a vague idea of how to train. I have some unfinished busines to take care of in Madison and will be returning in 2012 to see what I can do the third time.
I'm in Chicago, and lately have been taking full advantage of the beautiful fall running weather that we are having. I took a trial run of EN at the end of september and then officially started my membership a couple of days ago. The amount of material available in the wiki and in the discussion boards is a bit overwhelming but I figured I could approach one page, one topic at a time and then into the OutSeason and the journey begins. See you around.
Pat and David, welcome aboard! Pat, we have a VERY active Chicago Sleeper Cell. I think they may even have their own Group. I know they do on Facebook. Look for Jennifer Burbatt
Just joined a couple of days ago but heard many great things about EN. Not my first year doing triathlons, but did my first half ironman - Vineman 70.3 this year and had a great time. Ending the 2012 triathlon season with my first Ironman - IMNYC and still can't believe I signed up. This is my first time with online coaching and also active with a local NYC crew (TriLatino). Doing my third NYC marathon in a couple of weeks and hope to crush it and PR. After, ready to take on the OutSeason in November to prepare for an exciting year. Looking forward to a great season!

@Annie, Oceanside 70.3 was my first HIM last April and although I live in So Cal, I spent most of my OS training indoors. It can be done!
@Mac, Thanks for the extra bit of encouragement! Everyone here thinks I'm nuts to try to pull off Oceanside 70.3. I'll show um...
