Posted By Dave Tallo on 23 Dec 2009 08:53 PM Good question. Can you or any other WSMs sketch out a program? I have absolutely no idea what it would take to build up to 25 pullups.
It's about Pavel Tsatsouline, who apparently is "The Man" when it comes to pullups. I see his name mentioned in most of the internet articles about pullups. It echoes everything else I've read, that says to do a similar approach to our Hundred Pushups program. High volume, just shy of muscle failure. Lots of reps, up to 75% of your max pullups, 1-2 times a day, 2-3 times a week.
Sounds like a good approach to me...
I think I will try to do 3-4 sets of 50-75% of my max with whatever rest i need inbetween and as many as I can on the last set. Stick to the three days a week like the push up challenge and see how it goes.
Assuming that goes well then increase it by 1 more pull up the second week and then retest after 2 full weeks and go from there.
I definitely started too strong. After two consecutive days of pullups and pushups I could hardly raise my arms above my head and needed two days off. I am just glad my legs were still happy pushing the pedals. Tomorrow I should be back at full capacity.

Well, that would work OK except I can't even do 1!!!!! I need a serious pull-up for dummies guide!

Nemo, if you belong to a gym, the weighted pull up machines are a girls best friend I suppose those don't count though ?? or do they??
Posted By Sheryl Leonard-Schneck on 24 Dec 2009 09:02 AM Merry Christmas eve-a driveway full of snow shoveling and 105 push ups for the morning.
Sheryl,
Wow!!! You inspire me.....105...amazing! I am guessing these are all man pushups or girly ones mixed in?
Did my week 2 day 2 this am after the brick. Pumped out 71.....but, I must confess 3 girl ones at the end....I hated to do that, still mad at myself ....trying to make myself just do the regular ones....ok, day 3, no more back door!
Been following this thread for the last couple of days. I think I'm in! (I'm about to pull the trigger on the iPhone app.) Can't imagine ever doing 100 pushups, but it would be kind of cool if I could
Posted By Michele Cellai on 25 Dec 2009 10:55 AM Dave- Some of us have a new test before week 3. Do you want to add a column to the spreadsheet for 2nd test?
Michele: Thanks - done.
Milk44 and CoachP: Un-be-freaking-lievable.
Kristen: you're a pullup machine - way to take a solid and commanding lead!
Got the whole family into it for a push up contest on Christmas-unfortunately that made them all too sore to shovel on the 26th! Once I get my 100 push ups I will jump on the pull up wagon. First things first-and for the record all of us where on our toes Keep up the good work all
Sheryl- so cool you got the whole family involved!
Kristen= really, you gotta tell me how to do those pullups! I'm getting Joe to put in a pullup bar somewhere so I can get started. I really would love to do just one pull-up completely unassisted. That would be HUGE for me!
I did the two week test yesterday after doing week 2 workout on Sat and came up just 1 shy of where I "should" be for week 3. Since I didn't have any rest before the test I figured that was close enough. So TODAY I did Day 1 of week 3. OMG- I'm dying! 70 pushups total. Holy Cow!!!! That's 3 days of pushups in a row and I'm REALLY ready to take tomorrow off as a rest day!!!
Nemo, I think you would be surprised at your own strength. I bet you can already do one pullup unassisted! I was able to do 5 of them at a time to start, so I just started following the lowest level numbers of the pushup challenge. I'm repeating week 2, though, because I'm not ready to do more pullups yet. BTW, way to go on the pushups! You have left me in the dust! I think if I paid more attention to the Body Composition challenge (I'll be good again 1/1/10), these pushups and pullups would be easier!
Will have to unfortunately bow out of the pushup challenge, after wiping out on my nephew's Christmas RipStick. Finally got the hang of the darned thing, and was cruising along nicely when I lost it and tweaked my rotator cuff bracing myself in the fall.
I will enjoy seeing the results of the group, though! Get 'er done!
I did 20 pushups in a row today!!! Total of 80 over the sets, but I'm more floored in my ability to do 20! I was dying at the end, but I just can't believe how effective this program is at ramping up a total weakling like myself! This has been a great challenge!
way to go! you guys are great! I know I missed the start deadline (wasn't in EN then), but I'm gonna give this a go - if all goes well I'll be starting next week (assuming my hand is healed up by then...one of my kitties decided to bite me yesterday and I can't do much with it right now). Ugh... it's always something.
I think this will be a great way to build my strenght back up after my summer shoulder injury... I did push ups for the first time 12/24 - I think I eeked out 10 or so before having to drop to my knees to do a few more girl-style. I think I did 3 sets total (more on my knees each set) ... man was I sore!
Once upon a time I could do 3-4 pull ups on a good day... this may help me get back to those (I hope).
Keep up the great work... I'll be playing catch up!
Funny- was having a hard time with this challenge, but kept pushing myself thinking it should get easier (NOT!) Finally dawned on me today- I've been doing these push-ups REAAAALLLLYYY SSSLLLOOOWWWLLLYYY. DUH! No wonder I was suffering and dreading. I looked at today's schedule and the epiphany came- If I go fast, I might actually make it.
I am at work. I locked the door, opened the window, took off my sweater (but put on a patient gown just in case) and knocked it all out. Voila! Arms still feel like noodles but I did them all! Very psyched. Now I can't wait!
I didn't participate last week and this week I went to the gym to see if I was still welcome there as I only give them money at this point.
I decided to bench press instead and easily put up 10 reps (very controlled) with a weight that was hard to get 7 reps with 3 weeks ago! I still think that pushups are better for us as it replicates our aeroposition more closely and helps to stablize the subscapularis better than bench presses. I will have to get back on the horse again (push ups).
71 total today. Three of the sets were over my original max. This program is definitely working for me. Talked the family into the pull up challenge once we get through this one. I will need to go get a pull up bar this next week.
Got in 120 today, couldn't get anyone else to join me today, but it did motivate the teenagers to clean their rooms-push ups with mom or clean rooms Oh well-Happy New Year

Sheryl, 120! good job! How many teens do you have? I love the idea of suggesting to my boys( 20, 19,16,14,11),pushups or cleaning....hahaha, funnyI think they would just laugh and give me the "YEAH, RIGHT" response....I prolly could coerce my 14 and 11 year olds to, but the others are way to independent from mom! Happy New Year!
Kathy it looks like we are in the same boat I have a 19, 17 and 16 year old-I did actually have to pay them the first time on Christmas eve-a dollar a push-up-wasn't out too much money, the 16 year old got me for $25 just to beat his sisters! So it continues to come down to choices-none of them can beat me yet-but I am hoping the 16 year old will jump on the band wagon. Pump it up into the New Year

Hahah...bribery, now we are talking reality!! Sounds like something my 16 yold would do,though with brothers cause we have no sistas I know my 16 year old can beat me hands down! You are a beast! Keep it up...it is fun to see you post such high numbers!
Whew! 88 pushups with 21 in a row. What is starting to surprise me now is that I don't get nearly as sore afterwards as I did in the first few weeks. I just hope I can keep this up next week when the OS starts!
Up to 140 today-the cat just watched and looked at me like I was crazy. Finally something that I am good at -I am going to get my Monday night Total Tone class going on this, what a great goal for 2010 Happy New Year-keep up the good work
Got my 120 in yesterday....after my last run challenge 4 miler outside, then I was out the door again to a family gathering. Push ups are getting harder and easier Now a two day break before tackling week 4!! Great job everyone

50 for me, 16 for my daughter and 33 for my husband. My arms and sides feel better this morning than they did yesterday.
